Temporum Varietate For Two Guitars from Once Around the Sun for classical guitarists.
My thoughts are often turned to the dilemmas facing humanity, be they natural or self-inflicted. When composing these works, I felt that our time exemplified the curse, “May you live in interesting times”; in other words “troubled times”, hence the title. Homelessness and poverty, plague, hatred and division, and wars with their destruction, displacement, death and suffering are never far from my heart and mind. I have frustration as to why humanity causes so much suffering and yet, I also feel a deep compassion for people. So I wrote music that for me, reflects the turmoil, pity and hope that we undergo in life. Like with its sister suite, For Syria, my hope is that performances of Temporum Varietate will empower audiences to act, strive and contribute to a peaceful and just world.
