The Conditions of Being Human (part 1)
Suite for Solo Guitar
This suite consists of four movements with music inspired by various aspects of the human experience. Specifically in this first suite (part 1) the music explores themes of creativity, contentment and exuberance.
I. Exordium Dramaticus - The Birth of Thought & Spirit
A dramatic introduction to the suite with broad and dark chords followed by a descending cascade of melody. The contrasting lyrical section flows to a reiteration of the opening ideas before ending in softened tones.
II. Riffing, or Making in the Moment
Designed around the improvisatory approach in Rock and Jazz soloing, Riffing opens with a decisive rhythm and a brief “shredding” episode. The music then establishes an accompaniment figure that underpins the primary melodic section. Further flamboyant “soloing” passages follow.
III. The Fruit of Contentment
In stark contrast to the other three movements of this suite is The Fruit of Contentment, a reflective and relaxed work filled with rich melodic and harmonic variation.
IV. Exultant
The finale to the suite explores celebratory emotions in music that is filled with light, energy and theatrics.
