Three Dissimilar Studies

For Intermediate to Advanced Guitarists

Each of the three studies here present a totally different set of challenges as well as being aesthetically disparate.

1. Study in E Major

The guitar is an instrument that facilitates parallel motion with chords that shift along the fretboard to change, key, colour and harmonic meaning. The opening right hand pattern is used through much of the piece. The ascending chords leading to the end must be executed with great legato and clarity.

2. Study in 2/4 3/8

The metric pattern iis the challenge as is also maintaining a distinct separation of the accompaniment pattern and melody. The repetitive minimalist approach to little changes in harmonic and melodic implications is key to an astute control of the score.

3. Study in G

With the fifth string tuned to G, this work is much about a fine control of “p” jumping strings while semiquavers are maintained by the fingers. The music is minimalist with contrast in chordal harmony at the outset and a two finger tremolo intensifying the climb to the final chord.
