These two pieces were written as interludes at a time when I was feeling very frustrated with the inane trappings of international relations, the scourge of political and social divisiveness, and the spread of needless suffering through foolishness and maliciousness.
1. Sarcasm
The opening seems pedestrian and harmless but is interrupted by a sudden strident figure. Repetitive banality intensifies without any closure but a return to the opening, the “same old, same old” , puts the point across.
2. Contempt
A very note-ridden, energetic and somewhat violent opening moves shortly to a sarcastic pizzicato and melodic “sneer”. Thumping chords frame another section of complaint and frustration. The opening repeats as if to emphasise one’s incredulity and disbelief, and ends on a shout.
